Childhood deprivation and preference for strong leaders were operationalized as degree of agreement with two statements: “My parents had problems to make ends meet”, and “I think having a strong leader who does not have to bother with parliament and elections is a good thing”. The correlation between the two was significant, even after controlling for current level of economic stress. The study thus evidenced a specific effect of early socio-environmental threats on authoritarianism. Source: Chevallier et alia (2017)
