According to a new study, people can tell your social class from your Facebook profile.
After asking 113 participants to let them look at their 10 latest FB profile pictures and answee simple questions about their education, income, and socioeconomic status, researchers had 9 naive observers try to guess the subjects’ social class.

Not only were the guesses consistent: they were also accurate, well below chance levels

The researchers concluded that people subconsciously express their social class in ways that allow it to be perceived by others.

The study did not investigate what these signals might be, an interesting topic for future qualitative research.

It did, however, note that whatever they may be, they contribute to class-specific, segregated social spaces.
