Overprotecting parents are harming their children.

This is the conclusion reached by a team of psychologists who examined the association, over 8 years, between overcontrolling parenting during toddlerhood...
...self-regulation during early childhood, and social, emotional and academic adjustment in preadolescence (n = 422).

Results showed that overcontrolling “helicopter” parenting at age 2 (which was assessed in the lab) was negatively associated with emotional regulation and inhibitory control at age 5.

Moreover, the latter were associated with child-reported emotional and school problems, as well as fewer teacher-reported social skills and academic productivity at age 10.

In a nutshell, overcontrolling parents made it harder for their children to develop the necessary skills to function autonomously, the study suggests.
