Peer tutoring programs (also) have a positive impact on tutors’ academic achievement, a new meta-analysis confirms.
Reviewing 16 studies on the subject, Leung (2018) found evidence for the positive impact of peer tutoring programs on the academic achievement of tutors (which is not to say that they do not benefit tutees first and foremost.)
More precisely, the researcher focused on “certain determinants of optimal effectiveness of peer tutoring on tutors’ academic achievement” (quote from the original article.)
Findings show that students benefit most from tutoring their peers:
  • In high school
  • When they tutor peers with low ability
  • When they tutor for more than 2.5 sessions per week
  • In mathematics
  • When their peer is of the same gender
Structured tutoring and random assignment were also found to positively contribute to the beneficial effects of tutoring on the tutor’s academic achievement.
